Day 4: From Springfield, MO to Oklahoma City, OK

1100 miles driven so far

A new, sunny day on Route 66, and we didn't want to take too long to get on the road, as a long journey awaited us: over 300 miles and about 7 hours according to Mr TomTom.
Most of the trip was done on secondary countryside roads, giving us the chance to enjoy the green meadows that make up the Missouri landscape. We passed along many large ranches and farms where the animals could be seen feeding peacefully on grass, bathing in small ponds and looking quite happy. Mainly, most ranches had cattle or horses, but we could see other animals, such as goats, donkeys and even llamas! In general, the whole thing looked quite rural and properly countryside.

One thing to note is the amount of people on lawnmowers we've seen, working on their courtyards and gardens, not many miles pass before seeing another one. But this number is nothing compared with the amount and density of various churches that appear randomly along the road, with the most varied names and sign posts sending out messages for the public. This is by far the most common type of "activity" we've found in this trip.

Route 66 took us from Missouri into Oklahoma, but before reaching the latter we briefly passed through Kansas. We only stayed in Kansas for a few miles, but still we had the chance to meet Mater the Tow Truck, who kindly posed for our blog, along with some other weird stuff:
Also in Kansas, we saw an unique item on the road: a roundabout. Yes, it was the first one we've seen in over 1000 miles, so we had to take a picture of it:

Then the road continued into the state of Oklahoma, where the landscape remained pretty much the same: green, tree-filled meadows with farms scattered all over them. Also, the road was filled with the usual American trucks, carrying all kinds of stuffs, quite frequently dogs!

Finally, after nearly 7 hours on the road, we arrived to Oklahoma City, a large city which seemed even larger after all these hours seeing nothing else than trees and cows. Also, we got stuck into a bit of a traffic jam, as it was rush hour. These kind of things form part of the trip as well : )

After the long day, we decided to stay in the hotel, hit the gym for a while to unwind, and have dinner watching a movie. It was not a bad decision, as soon we experienced first hand how thunderstorms are like in Oklahoma: up to 2 lightnings per second!

Time to go to bed now. Tomorrow, we'll try to visit Oklahoma City and then travel down to Texas.
