Third day on Route 66, driving for the second time to a city named Springfield, but this time in the state of Missouri. Before getting on the road, we took a bit of time to visit a few places in St. Louis. This city is considered the gateway to the midwest of the US, and a very big arch was built several years ago to remember the people making their way to the west in search of a better life.
The arch dominates most views from downtown, as it is really, really tall (almost 200 m), and it is nicely designed. It is placed right next to the mighty Mississippi river.
The Mississippi river crossing St. Louis.
There are a few other interesting sights in downtown, such as an old courthouse and several parks and fountains, all of them aligned to east so the Arch is seen at the end.Another interesting monument is the Cathedral-Basilica of St. Louis, built in a very European style. Apparently, it is quite nice inside, but we couldn't confirmed as it was closed this early in the morning.
Before leaving St Louis, we made a quick stop in one of these establishments you can only find in USA, a Donut Drive-In, with an extensive range of freshly made donuts which made for a very good brunch.
Then it was time to hit the road again, driving through the Illinois countryside, dominated by extensive meadows with green pastures and cattle farms all around. Being on Route 66, we had our share of weird places on objects to make the trip more bearable.
The Devil's bridge, another feature of Route 66.
The rest of the journey continued uneventfully until our arrival to Springfield. There wasn't much to do here, so we took advantage of the free wifi and computer available and got up to date with the blog. Tomorrow, quite a long trip awaits, taking us to Oklahoma, where several tornadoes have struck in the past days. If we see one, we promise a picture!
(poli) hombre si veis un tornado yo preferiría que os pusiérais bajo cubierto en vez de ir a echarle una foto..... take care xx
