It's time to say goodbye to the beautiful Chicago and hit the road to do what we came to do: "ROUTE 66".
At the Herz rental office we were given an Infiniti G37X, an upper class sedan fully equiped, even with a back camera so you don't run over a racoon when you are moving backwards :)
We really enjoyed Chicago, even though we were there only for a short time. The city felt clean, safe, comfortable (at least Downtown). There was plenty of stuff to see, do and eat.
While driving the scenary quickly changed from city suburbs to wide open spaces: immense plains as far the eye can reach. The old route 66 mostly runs along the interstate highway, passing through small towns and villages.
More or less midway we stopped at the Funk Grove maple sirup factory. Yes, it's sirup with "i" instead of "y", and here is the explanation:
This a family run little factory that makes maple sirup from the trees nearby. While we were tasting different kinds of sirups the lady explained to us the reason for their different taste and colour, which depends on when the sap was collected from the tree. All of them were very tasty, so we had to take a sample with us, hehe.
After that sweet stop we continued straight to Springfield, still an hour and a half away, where we checked in the hotel and decided to stay there to rest.
And no, we didn't see Homer Simpson around, maybe in the next Springfield in a couple of days : ).

Bye,bye Chicago
It was time now to head to Springfield, 300 miles away. Soon we started to find signs indicating that we were on Route 66. In most cases it was memorabilia associated with road stops in the 50's, such as gas stations, restaurants and a few strange items such as a giant astronaut holding a rocket! While driving the scenary quickly changed from city suburbs to wide open spaces: immense plains as far the eye can reach.
